With approximately 60,000 admissions per year and 10,000 average daily population in twelve jails citywide, the NYC jail system is among the largest in the nation. The Division of Correctional Health Services (CHS) of the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation is responsible for the delivery of medical and behavioral health care, social work services, discharge planning and reentry services 24-hours a day, 7-days a week. CHS is a national leader in the delivery of health care to the justice-involved population and works continuously to improve access to, and quality and continuity of, care within the jail system.
CHS conducts a comprehensive medical and mental health assessment for every patient at the point of admission, offers robust screening for infectious diseases (HIV, hepatitis C, STDs, TB, etc.) and helps with the management of chronic and acute conditions. CHS is committed to improving the quality and continuity of care provided to its patients both during and after incarceration, and to the population health of the communities to which our patients return.
Under supervision of the Health Services Administrator/On-Island Administrator, the Administrative Assistant is responsible for assisting in the overall Operations of Rikers Island. Also provides secretarial support to the On-Island Administrators. Works in concert with all Correctional Health Services disciplines, Department of Corrections, vendors and other agencies.
Must be able to handle payroll related questions and pre-generate timekeeping records.
Ability to maintain data and/or informative reports on logs and databases.
Ability to handle a high call volume, receive and disseminate important information related to medical services.
Ability to work in a Correctional setting
On a neede basis, must be able to collect and disseminate medical related information to inmates/patients.
Education: High school diploma/GED equivalent required. Two years post high school education preferred. A minimum of 3 years of experience as an Administrative Assistant or medical secretary preferred.
Experience: Excellent computer skills, required, including word processing such as MS Office and strong typing skills. Must have excellent verbal and written skills. Must be well-organized and have excellent time management skills.
