Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)

With approximately 60,000 admissions per year and 10,000 average daily population in twelve jails citywide, the NYC jail system is among the largest in the nation. The Division of Correctional Health Services (CHS) of the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation is responsible for the delivery of medical and behavioral health care, social work services, discharge planning and reentry services 24-hours a day, 7-days a week. CHS is a national leader in the delivery of health care to the justice-involved population and works continuously to improve access to, and quality and continuity of, care within the jail system.

Responsibilities:

  1. Provides basic bedside care
  2. Maintains comfortable, orderly, safe and clean environment for patients
  3. Measures & records patients vital signs (such as height, weight, temperature, blood pressure, pulse and respiration)
  4. Assists with bathing, dressing and personal hygiene of patient
  5. Prepares and gives injections and enemas
  6. Monitors catheters
  7. Records food/fluid input/output
  8. Dresses wounds
  9. Assists with bed positioning, standing and walking of patients,
  10. Collects samples of blood and/or urine for testing
  11. Performs routine laboratory tests as directed by supervisor
  12. Prepares and administers (orally, subcutaneously, through an IV) and records prescribed medications.
  13. Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with the policy regarding the administration of medications by a LPN.
  14. Assists in relevant health teaching for patient
  15. Records all care information concisely, accurately and completely, in a timely manner in the appropriate format and on the appropriate forms/templates
  16. Performs other position related duties as assigned, depending on assignment setting

Depending on setting may also:

  1. Start intravenous fluids
  2. Direct care provided by nursing aides
  3. Floats among various clinical services, where qualified

Other responsibilities

  1. Upholds HIPAA regulations
  2. Punctual and dependent for assigned/confirmed shifts

Human Relation Skills:

  1. Is responsible and cooperative with supervisor, fellow associates, patients, visitors, and Department of Correction personnel.
  2. Maintains friendly working atmosphere.
  3. Maintains professional attitude.
  4. Maintains professional appearance and adheres to uniform policy of the Department of Nursing.
  5. Accepts constructive criticism as evidenced by appropriate changes in behavior.
  6. Utilizes established channels of communication.
  7. Recognizes, accepts, and respects people as individuals.
  8. Recognizes limitation and seeks assistance appropriately.
  9. Meet standards for attendance as per policy.

Qualifications:

Graduate of an accredited LPN program

Current LPN license, in good standing with the state licensing board

Minimum of one year LPN experience preferred

Required credentials current on file

This is a union position, along with salary, this position receives 1199 benefits including vacation, holiday, sick, pension, major medical and dental coverage.
